Juntos leader Olivia Vasquez receives P.I.C.C. Youth Leader Award

It is with much pride and joy that we announce that on Oct. 22nd Juntos’ own Olivia Vasquez was PICC’s 2015 Youth Leader Award recipient!

In 2012 Olivia co-found Fuerza, the Juntos Youth Committee, focusing on college access for undocumented youth. She help spearhead college access trainings of school counselors in South Philadelphia, develop a comprehensive college access guide through Juntos and the Mayor’s Office of Education and was part of the drafting of the PA Dream Act. We are so proud of the leader Olivia has become and look forward to this amazing leaders continued work in the community.

DACA applications can be a long and difficult process, especially when going about it alone. So this past Sunday at Juntos we held a legal clinic to help young people complete their applications. With the support of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT), we had trained volunteers and pro-bono attorneys available to help people get screened for DACA, start their applications, and complete them.

DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is a way for undocumented young people who came into the United States before June 15, 2007 and were under 16 when they came to get a temporary work permit and protection from deportation. Applications cost $465.

The PFT also donated three full scholarships for the young people who participated in the clinics, which were raffled out after the clinic. Below are the three lucky winners:

Liberation Concert at Berks Detention Center

As part of a national week of action to end family detention, on Saturday, July 11th Juntos will be hosting a concert at the Berks Family Detention Center.

 

Some families have been held for over a year under harsh conditions including, abuse from guards and inadequate medical care. With the Liberation Concert community and allies can show our support for the families and make it clear to ICE, now is the time to Shut Berks Down!

 

Join local and national groups for this concert with music from Olmeca, Son Revoltura, Son Cosita Seria, Francisco Benito, and Las Zumbatistas.
